A Vegan Teacher – How Radical!

A Vegan Teacher – How Radical!

‘Hi vegan!’  or ‘Warning! Vegan coming’ are phrases I often here on a daily basis in my job as a teacher. My lifestyle and food choices are not something that would normally be known in an ordinary school where teachers don’t eat with their students. But my school is no ordinary school. The pupils are extra-ordinary but they struggle with things out of the ordinary. That’s why I am also known as ‘The Vegan’.   I know by just being me I have raised their awareness of veganism and plant based living. On a daily basis I get jokes, pictures, comments, and questions but I’ve also had hugs and kind gifts and I have influenced at least three colleagues to change. However, the hardest thing for me is their inclination to watch animal cruelty on YouTube. They did…

Once You Go Loose You Won’t Go Bag

Once You Go Loose You Won’t Go Bag

Tea is the second-most consumed beverage in the world, after water. But despite a recent tea renaissance we are still using tea bags; the coffee equivalent of instant granules. So, what’s the difference between a cup of loose tea and a cup of tea with a bag?   These days most tea bags are filled with low-grade fannings or dust; tea leaves that have been chopped, ground and reduced to within an inch of their life. The essential oils which give tea its wonderful flavour and medicinal benefits are left soaking into the chopping board.   Yes, the trusty tea bag has simplified tea making by making brewing easier and cleaner but in doing so we have lost the prowess of the loose leaf. We’re making better choices now when it comes to the things we eat and…

Vegan Tacos – No Whey!

Vegan Tacos – No Whey!

A new fully vegan taco restaurant has opened in Plymouth, Devon and the public can not get enough of it. The restaurant is aptly named No Whey Tacos and is owned by two vegans, Fiona Graham and Joseph Pilkington, who have been vegan for two years. The Mexican inspired tacos will consist of fillings such as barbeque pulled jackfruit, bean, and portobello mushroom as well as a range of accompaniments that you can use to customise your tacos with. The idea behind No Whey Tacos is to bring plant based food to the masses and encourage more non vegans to try vegan food and realise how delicious it can be. We do not after all, munch on just carrots and grass – as it is all too often suggested by those who are oblivious to the culinary options…

Vegan Protein Found In Nuts And Seeds Are Proven To Be Healthier Than Meat

Protein found in nuts and seeds have been proven to be healthier than meat protein, as concluded in a study from researchers in California and France. The study found that those who ate large amounts of meat protein had a 60 per cent increase in cardiovascular disease, while those who ate large quantities of protein from nuts and seeds had a 40 per cent reduction in cardiovascular disease. The study was published by the International Journal of Epidemiology and it was conducted with 81,000 participants. Gary Fraser, MB ChB, PhD, from Loma Linda University, who was one of the main researchers on the study said: “While dietary fats are part of the story in affecting risk of cardiovascular disease, proteins may also have important and largely overlooked independent effects on risk.” On the published study it said: “He…
